Definition: A condition caused by a brief whole body exposure to more than one sievert dose equivalent of radiation. Acute radiation syndrome is initially characterized by anorexia; nausea; vomiting; but can progress to hematological, gastrointestinal, neurological, pulmonary, and other major organ dysfunction. |
